What is testosterone replacement therapy?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (or sometimes referred to as TRT treatment) is a type of therapy geared toward treating low testosterone levels in the body. Testosterone is one of the sex hormones present in both men and women (in different quantities) that plays important roles in the human body. Specifically in men, it’s thought to regulate strength, sex drive (libido), bone mass, body fat distribution, overall muscle mass, and the production of erythrocytes (red blood cells) and sperm. Low testosterone levels in men or “low T” stem from the inability of the testes to produce adequate quantities of testosterone. Testosterone production declines as men age. Studies show that almost 40% of men aged 45 and older suffer from low testosterone levels. Usually, by the age of 30 years old, most men start experiencing a gradual decline in testosterone which continues with age.

IS TRT REALLY NECESSARY?

Most men with low T exhibit these symptoms:

It’s hard to imagine any man not bothered by the symptoms mentioned above. Even if it was the case, rest assured low libido, moodiness, loss of motivation, and tiredness distress and aggravate your partner. Also, low T has a negative effect on your long-term health and lifespan.

Multiple studies demonstrated an association between low testosterone and fatty liver in males. Low testosterone leads to the accumulation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), which in turn can cause insulin resistance and increased exposure of the liver to free fatty acids. It was also observed that low total testosterone and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (another important hormone often abbreviated as SHBG) along with insulin resistance can serve as reliable predictors of the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

In addition to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, low T levels in men may increase their risk of developing coronary artery disease. Studies have reported a reduced cardiovascular risk and reduced mortality in T-deficient men who underwent T replacement therapy versus untreated men. Testosterone replacement therapy has been shown to improve myocardial ischemia in men with coronary artery disease, improve exercise capacity in patients with coronary heart failure, and improve HbA1c, serum glucose levels, and insulin resistance in men with diabetes and prediabetes.

What are low T symptoms?

Most men with low T exhibit these symptoms:

  • Lower libido
  • Erectile dysfunction/Weaker erections
  • Depression/Irritability
  • Loss of body mass
  • Loss of strength
  • Lethargy
  • Body and facial hair loss
  • Lower confidence
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Larger breasts
  • Smaller testicles
  • Increased body fat
  • Weaker bones
  • Visceral body fat

Are there risks associated with TRT?

Short answer is Yes. As with many other medical treatments, TRT replacement therapy does come with a few risks, and our qualified provider will explain and address those potential side effects. Beso providers will also go over the risks vs benefits with you so that you may make an informed intelligent decision on therapy.

Why Beso Wellness and Beauty?

At Beso Wellness and Beauty, we don’t simply diagnose low T by simply low concentration of testosterone. A number of other critical biomarkers like SHBG, free testosterone, and estradiol levels are also measured and considered along with clinical symptoms and complaints. Because Low T levels are also highly correlated with chronic medical conditions such as hypertension, overweight, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, renal failure, frailty, malignancy, and cardiovascular events, TRT therapy requires multidisciplinary knowledge and experience in a broad spectrum of medical fields. Our providers are a few in the area trained in numerous fields like endocrinology, rheumatology, internal and family medicine. We take pride in providing the best care for our patients and offer a variety of TRT options to our clients: topical gels, creams, patches, troches, pellets and injections. We only prescribe and administer natural, bioidentical testosterone – identical to what your body produces naturally.
