Chelation

Conveniently located to serve the Phoenix, Glendale and Scottsdale area.

What is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation therapy involves a series of intravenous infusion treatments of the salts of a chelating agent such as EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid) used to remove heavy metals (including mercury, cadmium and lead) from the blood. EDTA binds to heavy metals and minerals in the blood so that they can be excreted in the urine. EDTA not only binds heavy metals, it also “chelates” calcium, one of the constituents of atherosclerotic plaque that causes heart disease and stroke.

What Are The Main Benefits?

Chelation therapy enhanced metal-catalyzed oxidation of the organ tissue. Studies showed significant reduction in cardiovascular events in people who have previously had a heart attack and people who had diabetes when treated with EDTA-based chelation therapy. Small-scale studies have suggested improvement in cognitive function in patients treated with deferoxamine (DFOA – one of chelating agents used for iron toxicity). However, chelation therapy, using FDA-approved agents, is approved when used as a treatment for metal poisoning or iron overload. All other uses are considered to be off-label uses.

Is it Safe?

Although this treatment is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat metal poisoning only, it is considered safe if proper protocols are followed. For example, since EDTA chelation seeks and binds to essential minerals (in addition to heavy metals), your provider should carefully monitor minerals and non-heavy metals in your blood to ensure safe and healthy levels of important nutrients are maintained in your body.

How Does Chelation Therapy Work?

A chelating agent such as EDTA, DMSA, DFOA, DMPS or zeolites are molecules used to bind toxic heavy metals in your blood and help remove them from our bodies through urination. A typical treatment cycle may include 20 infusions spread over 10 to 12 weeks. Each session lasts for about 1.5 hrs as this therapy requires a slow drip rate to prevent kidney overload. At the same time as chelation, our doctors will start replacing essential minerals as those are also removed along with the toxins.

How Many Sessions of Chelation Therapy Are Needed?

The number of sessions depends on your test results. The higher the concentration of heavy metals you have in your system, the more sessions will be recommended by a physician. Normally, our doctors don’t recommend more than 2 sessions a week.
