What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a science-based and data-driven approach to analyzing and deciphering the root cause(s) of symptoms. Until the root source is identified and addressed, symptoms can only be masked and never eliminated effectively. It’s a medicine of “why?” and not just the medicine of “what?”. Functional medicine treats the entire body as an interconnected system of organs and not just the organs individually. It’s a fundamentally different approach to treating non-acute diseases and trauma, like chronic auto-immune disease, for example.
While conventional (allopathic) medicine Treats all patients with similar symptoms alike, functional medicine considers each patient’s unique medical history, genetic component, diet and nutrition, exercise, lifestyle, social factors, behavioral, and environmental factors to customize the treatment plan to each individual. Functional Medicine practitioners are also doctors and do use conventional lab tests, however, in addition to those labs they also perform specialty labs to gauge your toxic load, and exposure to mold, decipher the type and cause of your inflammation and analyze your metabolism.
Functional medicine doctors partner with patients so patients can actively participate in diagnosis and treatment instead of being passive recipients of prescription medicine. By shifting the conventional disease/symptom-based approach of medical practice to a more patient-focused approach, functional medicine is rethinking disease, rethinking medicine, and helping people achieve optimal health.
What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative Medicine brings together conventional evidence-based clinical healthcare approaches (like medication and psychotherapy) and complementary therapies. Integrative medicine looks at the patient as a whole: mind, body, and spirit.
In this way, integrative medicine brings together or “integrates” scientifically and clinically proven modalities to help improve patients’ quality of life, and all aspects of patients’ well-being to achieve optimal health and healing. Some of those therapies may include acupuncture, clinical massage, herbal therapy, chiropractic therapy, culinary medicine (i.e. FODMAP), hypnotherapy, breathing and relaxation techniques, yoga and even Reiki. The treatments promoted in integrative medicine are never meant to substitute conventional medical care but rather complement it. Not all non-conventional therapies are suitable for all patients. Only doctors experienced in various medical disciplines with the highest level of training can be trusted with putting together a customized tailored plan that can influence long-term health and complex chronic conditions.
