Do Women Need Testosterone?

When one thinks about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women, testosterone is not what immediately comes to mind. It’s usually estrogen and progesterone hormones that are considered the female sex hormones, which they are. However, as It turns out, testosterone also plays a crucial part in women’s health and well-being. TRT benefits for women are real.

In women, testosterone is mainly made in the ovaries and the average testosterone levels drop by about 50% from their peak levels in the 20’s. Testosterone serves many important functions in female physiology and when testosterone levels decline those important functions can become negatively affected.

As we age into our 30’s and 40’s, the natural hormonal decline is gradual but incessant. Unfortunately, not only women themselves but even their healthcare providers often don’t recognize that their exhaustion, aching bodies, frail bones, weight gain, brain fog, and painful sex are caused by low estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. TRT can be a quick, safe, and effective treatment for women blindsided by menopause, women who had an oophorectomy (both ovaries removed), or have other ovarian disorders.

What are the Symptoms of Low Testosterone?

When testosterone levels fall, women often report a number of distressing symptoms such as:

  • Low libido/sexual desire
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Reduction in general quality of life
  • Tiredness & fatigue
  • Depression & Mood changes
  • Headaches
  • Thinning hair
  • Dry and flaky skin
  • Weight gain
  • Brain Fog/Cognitive problems
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Osteoporosis

WHAT ARE THE TRT BENEFITS IN WOMEN?

  • Restores libido and arousal
Low testosterone levels have been found to be a major risk factor for low libido in women in their 40’s.  Studies have shown that by simply adjusting testosterone to healthy youthful levels you can regain that lost libido and return to your normal sexual desire.   Also, low testosterone levels can diminish the size of your clitoris and its sensitivity which can make it more difficult to reach orgasm or even lead to loss of orgasm potential.  Beyond an increase in libido, TRT  can reverse these physiological changes and you can once again regain the ability to achieve orgasm.
  • Increases quality of life
Restored sexual satisfaction spills over to feeling happy in other areas of life, like an improvement in your relationships with intimate significant others, and that can lead to improved mood, an increase in positive self-image, decreased anxiety, and overall performance
  • Increase in lean muscle mass
Lean muscles reduce the risk. They also protect your bones from becoming weaker later in life by increasing bone density and strength.
TRT improves your body’s response to exercise and you will likely notice the benefits in the mirror and the way your clothes fit. Research studies demonstrated that TRT can decrease overall body fat, increase muscle tone, strength and increase your energy levels. The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is higher in women with more muscle mass. This means they can burn more calories at rest and will lose weight more easily than women with less muscle. As a side perk, you will look better, clothes will fit better, posture and confidence will improve.
  • Increase in energy
Returning testosterone to normal levels will help to raise overall energy levels and can help you feel better. Falling testosterone levels are one of the reasons we lose so much energy as we age. Restoring normal energy levels via testosterone replacement can have a profound impact on the quality of life. Increasing energy can improve mood, boost confidence, and allow for activities that increase well-being.
  • Brain Health Support
Low testosterone levels in women are also associated with dramatic mood changes including anxiety, depression, and irritability. Returning T levels to youthful numbers can reverse these symptoms and return women to a state of good mental health. Multiple studies showed links between healthy testosterone levels and cognitive function.
  • Bone Health
Both osteopenia and osteoporosis (loss of bone mineral density) are correlated with increased risk of bone structure and are an important health concern for premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis can lead to life-threatening bone fractures. It is also responsible for the loss of integrity of the spine leading to the abnormal curvature of the spine, intradiscal shrinkage (essentially loss of height), fractures of the vertebrae, back pain, and even nerve damage.
Testosterone replacement therapy can help restore bone mineral density and reduce the risks of osteoporosis.

What are the TRT risks in women?

TRT is generally very safe when T-levels are restored to normal youthful levels. There are a lot of myths associated with TRT for females. Those myths are usually attributed to female bodybuilders who take testosterone in extremely high doses as a performance-enhancing drug. Those women often develop a deep voice, clitormegaly, acne, and hypersexuality.
